Low Intensity Laser Therapy: What Is it?

Low Intensive Laser Therapy, also known as Low Level Laser Therapy or Laser Biostimulation, or more simply known as Soft Laser Therapy is a dramatic new therapy which is becoming increasingly popular for the management of a wide variety medical conditions, such as soft tissue injuries (including sports injuries), low back pain, arthritis and skin traumas. Unlike the higher powered lasers employed in medicine, these low level lasers do not deliver enough power to damage tissue, but do deliver enough energy to stimulate a response from the body tissues to heal itself. Laser Therapy really is a form of light therapy, red and infrared light to be exact. Light radiation must be absorbed to provide a biological response. The visible red and infrared portions of the spectrum have been shown to have highly absorbent and unique therapeutic effects in living tissues.

Low energy lasers have been in use for therapeutic use for less than 20 years. Current Low Level Laser Therapy is advanced in the Soviet Union, France, Germany, Japan and England. Low Level Laser Therapy is just beginning to be recognized and utilized in the west. Low Energy Laser Therapy is poised to make a dramatic impact in the field of treatment, physical and rehabilitative medicine. Gaining in popularity as an alternative method of treatment for acute and chronic conditions, laser therapy is on the threshold of becoming a dominant factor in the area of alternative health care systems.
Low Level Lasers have been in use for less than 20 years. Clinically there have been no recorded serious side effects in over 1700 publications.

What does light therapy ACTUALLY do?

Light therapy can:

1.Increase vascularity by increasing the formation of new capillaries with additional ones that replace the damaged ones. New blood vessels speed up the healing process by carrying more oxygen and nutrients and moving the waste products.

2.Stimulate the production of collagen, a common protein found in the body used to repair damaged tissue and replace old tissue.

3.Stimulate the release of ATP which is the major carrier of energy to all the cells.

4.Increase lymphatic system activity to reduce edema at a faster rate than normal.

5.Increase RNA and DNA synthesis to help damaged tissue cells to be replace more promptly.

6.Reduce excitability of nervous tissue (pain relief).

7.Stimulate fibroblastic activities which aids in the repair process.

8.Increase phagocytosis activities which is the process of eliminating dead or degenerated cell structures due to tissue injury or chronic degeneration.

9.Increase a thermal like effect in the tissue, raising the temperature of the cells which aids in the healing process.
